Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had a “substantive” one and a half hour conversation with French leader Emmanuel Macron. He wrote about this on September 5 on Twitter.

According to Zelensky, he told Macron about the situation at the front, and also coordinated with him further military support from France. In addition, the heads of state exchanged assessments of the results of the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the Zaporozhye NPP.

Earlier, on August 30, it became known that the presidents of France and Ukraine had an off-the-record telephone conversation during which they discussed the trip of representatives of the IAEA mission to the ZNPP.

On August 21, US Presidents Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz discussed the need to stop the military escalation in the ZNPP territory. In addition, the parties reaffirmed their support for Kyiv in the long term.

The IAEA mission arrived at the ZNPP territory on the afternoon of September 1. On the day of the visit of specialists, the Armed Forces of Ukraine intensified the fighting in the area of the station. It was reported that four Ukrainian shells exploded at a distance of 400 m from the first power unit. On September 5, members of the mission left the territory of the station.

During a visit to the ZNPP, the IAEA mission and the agency’s director general Rafael Grossi looked at fragments of missiles fired by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The head of Energodar, Alexander Volga, stressed that one of the fragments was from a 155-millimeter artillery shell, which is how the American M777 howitzer fires.

On the same day, it became known that some of the IAEA experts would remain on the territory of the ZNPP as long as necessary. As Grossi explained, the agency will not be able to solve the entire range of tasks in one short visit. So far, only the first visit to the main sites has been completed.

The head of the IAEA also noted the violation of the integrity of the Zaporizhzhya NPP and added that it was impossible to assess whether the necessary elements were accidentally missing or intentionally.

In turn, the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, said that Moscow welcomes the permanent presence of IAEA members at the ZNPP. According to him, this will help dispel numerous speculations, since no one from the mission is authorized to give political opinions.

Zaporozhye NPP was taken under the protection of Russian forces during a special operation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. The decision to hold it was made against the backdrop of an aggravation of the situation due to shelling by the Ukrainian military, in connection with which the authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics turned to Moscow for help.
