According to the ex-president, he thought that Putin “was negotiating this way” when he pulled the military to the border. Prior to this, Trump said that under him there was “not a single invasion” of Russia in other countries.
The Russian military operation in Ukraine came as a surprise, former US President Donald Trump said in an interview with The Washington Examiner.
“I am surprised. I thought that was how he [Russian President Vladimir Putin] negotiated when he sent the military to the border… I thought it was a tough but smart way of negotiating. <…> And then he came in, and I think he changed,” said the ex-president.
Earlier, Trump noted that during his presidency, Russia did not make “a single invasion” in other countries. He also recalled that he supplied Ukraine with Javeline anti-tank systems and military equipment worth millions of dollars. According to Trump, without these complexes, Kyiv would not have had a chance.
Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24. President Vladimir Putin called its goal the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, as well as the protection of the inhabitants of Donbass from genocide by the Kiev authorities. The President has repeatedly stressed that Russia was forced to launch an operation, there was no other option for self-defense.
“All the tasks set, of course, will be solved. We will reliably ensure the security of Russia and our people and will never allow Ukraine to serve as a springboard for aggressive actions against our country,” the head of state said.
Prior to the start of the operation, on February 21, Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk. Trump called this decision brilliant.
