Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are necessary. So says former US President Donald Trump.

“There is no point if Russia and Ukraine do not sit down at the negotiating table and work out an agreement,” Trump was quoted by the American newspaper The Hill on Monday, April 18.

Since the start of Russia’s special military operation to protect Donbass, as Trump emphasized, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been behaving wiser than the leadership of the United States and has bypassed American leader Joe Biden.

In addition, the former US president also said that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine could have been avoided if he had stayed for a second term.

On March 29, another face-to-face round of Russian-Ukrainian talks took place in Istanbul. Then Russia received written proposals from Ukraine, confirming its desire for a neutral and non-nuclear status. Prior to this, the parties held several face-to-face meetings in Belarus. So, they took place on February 28 in the Gomel region, on March 3 and 7 in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. Then the negotiations continued online.

On April 12, Russian President Putin said that the Belarusian platform was suitable for further contacts with Ukraine: colleagues from Minsk had well organized several rounds of negotiations on their territory. He stressed that it became possible to start a direct dialogue with the Ukrainian side largely thanks to the efforts of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. Moscow explained that the tasks of the special operation include the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, the implementation of which is necessary to ensure the security of Russia. The decision was made against the backdrop of aggravation in the region as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
