Allegations in the American press that Russia allegedly launched an airstrike on the Drama Theater in Mariupol are another example of a disinformation campaign. This is stated on March 17 in a message from the Russian Embassy in Washington.
The Russian embassy’s comments came amid US media allegations that the Russian military had targeted a theater where people were believed to be present. In particular, the CNN TV channel, citing the Mariupol City Council, stated that Russian troops “purposefully and cynically destroyed the Drama Theater in the center of Mariupol.”
“We draw attention to the ongoing disinformation campaign in the US media about what is happening in Ukraine. Another example was the fake circulated in the local press about the alleged involvement of the Russian Armed Forces in the attack on the Mariupol Drama Theater, ”the Russian diplomatic mission commented on the Telegram channel.
The embassy offered to be guided by Russian resources when searching for “true information”. In particular, the data of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Defense of Russia and the Russian Embassy in Washington.
On February 16, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation denied Kyiv’s accusation of allegedly inflicting an airstrike on the drama theater in Mariupol, where people could be held hostage. The department emphasized that the militants of the Azov national battalion committed a new bloody provocation by blowing up a mined theater building.
Earlier that day, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the video footage of civilians killed in Chernigov allegedly at the hands of Russian troops circulated on the Web was a lie. According to the representative of the department, Major General Igor Konashenkov, there were “no and no” Russian military personnel in Chernihiv.
In mid-February, due to the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of the civilian population to the Russian Federation and asked for recognition of independence.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a corresponding decree. On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. As the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov clarified, the special operation has two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
