Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that illegitimate sanctions do not help the West achieve its goals. He said this on May 20 at a press conference following talks with his Malian counterpart Abdoulaye Diop.

“We know what sanctions are firsthand, and we can say with confidence that they do not help achieve the goals that the organizers of such illegitimate sanctions pressure declare,” he said.

On May 18, Diop arrived in Russia on a working visit amid an attempted military coup in Mali. On the eve of the authorities of the republic reported that on the night of May 11-12, a group of anti-progressive officers and non-commissioned officers of the country’s army, supported by the West, tried to carry out a coup d’état.

On May 16, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the aggressive revisionist course of the West requires a radical revision of Russia’s relations with unfriendly states and a comprehensive strengthening of other areas of foreign policy.

On May 14, Lavrov said that the EU countries are pursuing a policy that is mainly beneficial to Washington, losing signs of independence. He warned that the consequences of the Western hybrid war against Russia would be felt by all, and noted that Moscow was taking steps to ensure that this direct confrontation did not occur.

Prior to that, on May 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia was successfully coping with Western sanctions. He also noted that those who introduce them provoke a global crisis. The Russian leader warned that the “continuation of the sanctions obsession” would lead to “hard to reverse” consequences for the EU and the poorest countries.

Western countries have tightened anti-Russian sanctions in various areas in response to Russia’s conduct of a special operation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which was announced on February 24 against the backdrop of Ukrainian shelling of the DPR and LPR. Moscow explained that the tasks of the special operation include the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, the implementation of which is necessary to ensure the security of Russia.
