A former minister in the Australian state government of New South Wales (NSW) has been accused of sexually abusing a man and a teenage boy.

Gareth Ward, who is now an independent MP, is accused of committing the offenses in 2013 and 2015.

On Tuesday, he stated, “I will be asking my lawyers to seek to put this case before the courts as soon as possible, and I look forward to showing my innocence there.”

Mr. Ward has been charged with a total of five counts. One offense of sexual intercourse without consent carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

“Police will claim in court that the man sexually molested a 27-year-old male in Sydney in September 2015 and indecently attacked a 17-year-old boy in February 2013 at [NSW suburb] Meroo Meadow,” NSW Police said in a statement.
