It is necessary to introduce a package of new sanctions against Russia, the content of these measures will be determined by the EU in the coming days. This was announced on Friday, April 1, by the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of France, Jean-Yves Le Drian.

“We think it is necessary to introduce a new package of sanctions against Russia,” Le Drian said.

He stressed that the decision to introduce another package of anti-Russian sanctions was taken within the framework of the summit, which took place in Versailles, as well as at the last meeting of the EU member states.

On Thursday, March 31, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that all sanctions against Russia were prepared in advance, they would have been introduced in any case. He also noted that the collective West is not going to abandon the policy of economic pressure on Russia. Therefore, it is not worth counting on changes in these approaches in the near future.

The head of state instructed the government of the Russian Federation and the Central Bank to focus on the fact that “sanctions pressure on our country, as it was in previous decades, will continue” when organizing work to develop the economy.

On March 29, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called Western sanctions against Russia unacceptable. He stressed that the most severe sanctions could harm both sides and further complicate the situation.

The West began to tighten sanctions against Russia after Putin announced on February 24 the start of an operation to protect civilians in the Donbass. A few days earlier, the situation in the region escalated due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents to Russian territory, and also turned to Moscow for help. On February 21, Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the DNR and LNR.
