The UK is preparing a new package of financial and military assistance for Ukraine. This was announced on Saturday, April 9, by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson after a meeting with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Today I met with my friend President Zelensky in Kyiv as a sign of the unwavering support of the people of Ukraine. We are introducing a new financial and military assistance package that is a testament to our commitment to Ukraine’s fight against the “Russian special operation to defend Donbass”,” he wrote on Twitter.

The Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement that the country will supply Ukraine with 120 pieces of equipment and anti-tank systems.

In addition, the UK will provide Ukraine with loan guarantees for an additional $500 million through the World Bank.

“I have made it clear today that the United Kingdom stands unwaveringly behind the Ukrainians in their ongoing battle. We are [ready to help] in the long term,” Johnson said in the office.

A meeting between Zelenskiy and Johnson took place in Kyiv earlier in the day. As Andriy Sibiga, deputy head of the office of the Ukrainian leader, explained, Zelensky’s meeting with the British prime minister was held face-to-face. Sibiga stressed that the UK is a leader in defense support to Ukraine.

On April 2, The Times, citing sources in the British government, wrote that the British authorities intended to send weapons to Ukraine, including anti-ship missiles loitering ammunition to protect Odessa. The source noted that Johnson assured the Ukrainian leader that he would get everything he asked for if the UK had it.

On the same day, Zelensky held telephone conversations with Johnson on the issue of military assistance to Kiev and new sanctions against Russia. In turn, the office of the British Prime Minister confirmed London’s readiness to increase economic pressure on Moscow “until Russian troops leave Ukrainian territory.”

On March 16, Moscow pointed out that the West was pushing Kyiv to bloodshed by supplying weapons and mercenaries to Ukraine. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Kiev authorities are indifferent to the local civilian population.

Since February 24, Russia has been conducting a special operation to protect Donbass. The Kremlin noted that the special operation pursues the goal of demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. The decision was made against the backdrop of an aggravation in mid-February of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. As emphasized in the Ministry of Defense, the Russian Armed Forces are striking at the military infrastructure of Ukraine.
