The European Union is not at war with Russia, but in the current situation it supports Ukraine, said EU diplomat Josep Borrell.

Borrell stressed that he considers sanctions against Russia necessary, but does not attribute them to politics.

Josep Borrell: “Sanctions are necessary, but sanctions in themselves are not politics, they are a reaction to circumstances, we need solutions to the problem that has arisen, and these solutions must be linked to diplomacy. We are not at war with Russia, but we are on the side of the attacked.”

Borrell noted that under the circumstances it is extremely irresponsible to talk about nuclear war. He also added that the EU is not considering the creation of a European army. However, according to Borrell, EU member states need to improve coordination between their armed forces and increase joint defense spending.

Josep Borrell: “Sanctions are introduced to hurt the economy of the country under sanctions, but they also hurt you in return, and we must be prepared to pay the price.”

Recall that on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine. The reason was the appeal of the leaders of the republics of Donbass with a request for help. The head of the Russian Federation stressed that Moscow’s plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories. The purpose of the special operation is the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine.
